The Russian fleet is in decline
Today, the huge Soviet-era battlecruisers are a demonstration of the decline of the industry in Russia.
The large nuclear-powered Kirov-class battlecruisers, which once symbolized the might of the Soviet navy, have now become the embodiment of its gradual collapse. Military commentator David Ax writes about this for The Telegraph.
The Soviet Union once built four 28,000-ton missile-equipped cruisers to compete with NATO battle groups on the high seas. Before the collapse of the USSR in 1991, three ships managed to enter service, and the fourth was completed in 1998 for the Russian fleet.
