The saltiest reservoir in the world: where it is located, interesting facts and photos
It does not freeze below -58 degrees Celsius.
Located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica, the shallow Don Juan Pond is the saltiest body of water in the world. With a salt content that puts the Dead Sea to shame, it remains liquid even at -58 degrees Celsius.
This is reported by Oddity Central.
The 10 cm deep pond looks more like a large puddle than a real pond, but it has fascinated scientists for decades. A liquid pool of this size in an alien environment, where temperatures can drop to -58 degrees, could not fail to attract attention, and the tiny body of water has troubled scientists since it was discovered in 1961.
A quick analysis showed that the salt content in it is about 40%; for comparison: the salinity of the world ocean is 3.5%, the Great Salt Lake – from 5 to 27%, and the famous Dead Sea – 34%.
