Russian warships have disappeared from its base in Syria a day after rebel forces ousted longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad from the country. This is evidenced by new satellite images obtained by Business Insider.

The disappearance of ships from the naval base in Tartus could be a signal of weakening Russian influence in the region. This facility was Moscow's only naval base outside the post-Soviet space. It provides access to a warm port on the Mediterranean Sea and serves as a key point for the projection of power in the region.
