The smallest asteroid ever recorded exploded in the sky over Niagara Falls.
The smallest asteroid ever detected and measured before its explosion entered the Earth's atmosphere in November 2022. The space object, about the size of an average house cat, flashed a bright green light in the sky above Niagara Falls before disintegrating.
This is stated in a new study published in The Planetary Science Journal.
This asteroid, named 2022 WJ1, was discovered by astronomers just three hours before entering the atmosphere. As a result of friction with the air, it turned into a ball of fire, accompanied by a bright green trail and a loud explosion that lasted for about 10 seconds. Residents of Canada and the USA saw this phenomenon.
