Trump called the Panama Canal a vital “national asset of the United States.”
US President-elect Donald Trump said that the United States may return control of the Panama Canal due to “inflated fees.”
“The fees Panama charges are ridiculous, especially considering the extraordinary generosity the United States has shown to Panama,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The Panama Canal was transferred to the United States under Panama's control as part of an international agreement during the time of US President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos in 1977, he said.
