Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, while in office, prevented Ukraine from quickly joining NATO because she feared a military response from Russian ruler Vladimir Putin. This is stated in her memoirs, excerpts from which are published by Die Zeit.
“I understood the desire of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe to become members of NATO as soon as possible,” she writes about the crucial NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, when plans to obtain candidate status for Ukraine and Georgia were discussed.
