From the beginning of 2025, new rules for basic assistance for Ukrainian refugees may enter into force in Austria. One of the key provisions is that owning a car can be a reason for refusing to receive this assistance.

At the same time, the approach to this issue will vary depending on the region, writes Der Standard.

The decision is made by the Coordination Council of the federal government and the Länder, but each Länder has the right to adapt the rules. In Vienna, the situation will be assessed individually: for example, owners of expensive cars may lose the right to assistance, while budget cars are unlikely to be a reason for refusal.
