The second season of the popular Netflix series “The Empress,” which tells about the life of the Austrian Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria (Sisi), pleasantly surprised Ukrainian viewers. In one of the episodes, a familiar melody suddenly sounded – the Ukrainian folk song “The Sun is Low”, also known as Peter's Aria from the opera “Natalka Poltavka” by Nikolai Lysenko.
According to the plot of the series, delegations from all over the Austrian Empire come to Vienna to see the new empress. Among the guests was a group of girls from Bukovina, who performed “The Sun Is Low” during the audience. Dressed in embroidered shirts and wreaths, they charmed those present with their song, and Sisi herself was moved to tears.
