The statement contains no criticism of Russia's nuclear threats or its attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure.
The world's largest economies are weakening their support for Ukraine, while increasingly leaning towards peace talks with Russia. According to the Financial Times, the joint statement of the G20 countries following the summit in Rio de Janeiro softened criticism of Russia’s war against Ukraine and contained only a broad reference to “human suffering.”
The joint statement refers only to the “negative additional consequences of war” and welcomes “initiatives that support a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.”
It is also noted that the document contained only one paragraph dedicated to the war in Ukraine, compared to seven paragraphs in the statement following last year…
