Epiphany, the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Epiphany – these are all the names of one important date in the church calendar, which is dedicated to the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.

Until September 1, 2023, Ukrainians celebrated Epiphany annually on January 19. However, after the transition to the New Julian calendar, most church holidays are celebrated 13 days earlier. Therefore, in 2025 Baptism of the Lord accounts for January 6.

What does the feast of the Baptism of the Lord mean

This day is considered one of the most revered winter holidays among Ukrainians. Its roots go back to biblical times. It is timed to an important event in the life of the Son of God, when Jesus Christ was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. According to legends, at that moment the Holy Spirit (a dove) descended on him and the voice of the Lord rang out from heaven. That is why the holiday is still called Epiphany.
