First of all, it is very important to observe the correct proportions of water and cereal. It all depends on what kind of dish you plan to cook. For example, if it will be rice soup, then 2-3 tbsp. a spoonful of rice per 2 liters of liquid. And if it should be porridge, then the proportions should be 1:1.5 (less rice than water). Choose cereal with less starch, then it will be more crumbly. For this, long or steamed rice is better.
