what traditions of this holiday existed among our ancestors – Various
Shrovetide is a traditional Slavic holiday that has long symbolized saying goodbye to winter and welcoming spring. During the whole week, people celebrate with various parties, games, and delicious traditional dishes.
The history of Masnytsia dates back to more than one century. In pre-Christian times, this day was a spring holiday, later it was tied to the beginning of Great Lent before Easter (celebrated one week before). Therefore, the date of the celebration changes from year to year.
Although it is often still quite cold and frosty during this period, our ancestors said in ancient times: “Crack, don't crack, the Epiphany has already passed” and “It's not until Christmas, but until Easter.” Also, among the people, Masnitsa is often called Syropusny week, Cheese Sunday, Kolodiy, Midwife's holiday, Zagovyny or Zapust.
