Every December, the Earth passes through the debris clouds of asteroid (3200) Phaethon, which form the Geminid meteor shower. It is an unusual asteroid that behaves like a comet, spewing out sodium gas that looks like a comet's tail. Phaeton's orbital period is 1.4 years, and the meteors we observe are fragments of this asteroid. The flow lasts from mid-November to the end of December, and this year it peaks on the night before Saturday.
